Here are the ten African countries with the poorest access to electricity.

Before we get started, there are a few things you should know. First, the African continent currently has the poorest access to electricity in the world. And the continent's electricity crisis is largely due to African leaders' decades-long failure to adequately invest in their respective countries' electricity sectors in order to build much-needed capacity.

According to a recent Wood Mackenzie Ltd report, approximately $350 billion in investment is required between now and 2030 to significantly improve Africa's electricity access problem. The funds would be used specifically to improve capacity for electricity generation and distribution.

Meanwhile, here are the ten African countries with the worst electricity access in Africa. Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report, a global dashboard dedicated to tracking progress on energy access in Africa, provided the list. The dashboard is the result of a collaboration between the International Energy Agency (IEA), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the World Bank, and other partners.

However, keep in mind that the dashboard was last updated in 2019.

  1. (1) South Sudan: Has 7% electricity access.
  2. (2) Chad: Has 11% electricity access.
  3. (3) Central African Republic: Has 15% electricity access.
  4. (4) Malawi: Has 15% electricity access.
  5. (5) Democratic Republic of Congo: Has 19% electricity access.
  6. (6) Niger: Has 19% electricity access.
  7. (7) Burkina Faso: Has 19% electricity access.
  8. (8) Sierra-Leone: Has 26% electricity access.
