Manchester United Winger Antony Dropped from Brazil Squad Over Assault Allegations
Manchester United winger Antony has been dropped from Brazil's upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Bolivia and Peru after being accused of assault by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced Antony's removal from the squad on Monday, stating it was to "preserve the alleged victim, the player, the Brazil team and the CBF." Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus will take Antony's place.
Antony, 23, denied the accusations in an Instagram post, claiming he was the "victim of false accusations" and that evidence will prove his innocence.
Brazilian media published alleged WhatsApp conversations between Antony and Cavallin where he appears to apologize for "kicks and assaults." One photo shows Cavallin with a head wound.
Antony acknowledged a "tumultuous" relationship with verbal abuse from both sides, but maintained he never physically assaulted her. He stated Cavallin has presented contradictory versions of events and is confident the ongoing police investigation will prove the truth.
The assault claims come soon after Antony's high-profile £85.5 million transfer from Ajax to Manchester United. His absence deals a blow to Brazil's World Cup preparations, having established himself as a key winger.
