Nigeria's Flying Eagles defeated Tunisia to win bronze in AFCON U-20.
Nigeria's U-20 national football team defeated Tunisia 4-0 to cap up their campaign in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U-20 competition.
Gambia had previously denied the Flying Eagles the chance to win a historic eight championships, so in Friday's third-place match, the Flying Eagles came out in full force and completely destroyed the North Africans.
With another spectacular finish in stoppage time, the young midfielder placed the cherry on top of Nigeria's resounding 4-0 triumph.
This was the team of coach Ladan Bosso's boys' largest victory at the tournament in Egypt, so they saved the best for last.
With eight victories, Nigeria already holds the record for the most titles, but Friday's triumph also cemented its status as the country with the most Afcon U20 bronze medals in history.
Nigeria has placed third in the U20 Afcon competitions held in 1995, 2009, and 2013.
The Flying Eagles will be hoping to get it right as they turn their focus to the FIFA U20 World Cup, which is slated to take place in Indonesia between 20 May and 11 June 2023. After finishing their campaign on a high note, the Flying Eagles will hope to get it right.
At this year's AFCON U-20 tournament's final, Senegal and Gambia—the only two teams to defeat Nigeria's Flying Eagles—will face off against each other.
The Flying Eagles were praised for finishing third by Sunday Dare, the sports minister.
The Minister urged the team to embrace the lessons they learned during the competition as they get ready for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia in May, describing the bronze medal as better than nothing.
"We were unhappy that we weren't able to play in the championship game or take home the trophy as we had hoped, but this overwhelming win over Tunisia today (Friday) has helped to ease some of the hurt we had after the Gambia game last Monday. A bronze medal is preferable to none.
"At the moment, we also need to concentrate on performing much better at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia in May. There is not much time left, but I think the coaches now understand where they should concentrate on strengthening the team, Mr. Dare continued.
